Generally, when we talk about Diamond, the first
picture that comes in front of us is of a bright sparkling stone. Diamonds are
our most popular and most desirable gemstone. It was only in the last century that
diamonds became readily available. Prior to that, rubies and sapphires were the
most popular gems, especially for engagement rings.
Diamonds are one of the biggest purchases a couple
will make when they begin their new life together. But, many of you might be
aware of gold but not diamond. Because of this, it is important to know how to
avoid some common mistakes while buying diamond for the first time.
Diamonds
@ brighter lights: Every store wants their diamond to look
at their best. However, depending on the type of bulb used and its use of
ultraviolet wavelengths, even lower-grade yellow diamonds can look incredibly
white. We recommend that you take the ring away from the special lighting to
see its true color.
Diamonds
Grading: Check whether what you see is what you get. Jewellers
will most certainly want to bump or inflate the color, clarity or carat grade
up to the next higher one. For instance, a jeweller could sell a VS2 diamond
when in actuality it is a lower quality VS1, while asking the price of a VS2
diamond. The price difference may be significant, so always ask for diamond
certificate from the reliable source like GIA, EGL or AGs to ensure what you
pay is for what you get.
GradingCertificate: Rely on grading certificates from the
most reputable labs such as “Gemological Institute of America” (GIA), “American
Gemological Society” (AGS) or “European Gemological Laboratory” (EGL). Be
careful some stores may sell diamonds with certificate on same initials but
with different words.
Diamond
Flaws: The Jeweller may hide the flaws of diamond
underneath the prong setting of the rings. So it’s always better to inspect the
diamond without the setting under a jewelers loupe.
Non-disclosure of fracture filling:
Some diamonds have tiny, naturally occurring fractures which can be filled with
liquid crystal to make it more structurally sound. Experts are divided on the impact this high
temperature technique has on the diamond. Either way, treated diamonds should
be sold at a lower price and specifically identified on the grading
certificate.
Don’t
rely on advertisement: You may see attractive advertisements
for diamonds with huge discounts. The jewelry which you see on advertisement
may be no longer in stock. Always compare price with the other stores before
buying diamonds.
