Mangalsutra
literally means “Mangal meaning Auspicious” and “Sutra meaning Thread”, is a
holy necklace that is tied by a Hindu groom around the bride’s neck on the
wedding day. The Mangalsutra necklace is usually made with two strings of black
beads with a pendant in the center.
In most of the
Hindu north Indian weddings, mangalsutra plays an important part and has a
separate ceremony where the groom ties mangalsutra around the neck of his
bride. However, one must note that among many Hindu castes the mangalsutra is
not mandatory and historically they didn’t wear them. But, with the widespread
